I will not buy clothes for 12 months

I am not going to buy clothes for a year.

There I’ve said it and posted it on my blog, so no going back.

It is part of my 2013 The Year of Lean resolution.

Going on a sabbatical from clothes buying is not a unique challenge. Many others have done this and recorded their progress. See here, and here, and here, and here, and here.

So why do I want to do it?

Well, firstly I cannot declutter, and care for my stuff when I have more than fits in all my cupboards, wardrobes and chest of drawers. My house can’t look gorgeous if I have piles of clothes everywhere and scrunched up clothes falling off shelves. I have to keep the door of my linen clothes press closed as it is embarrassing to see the muddle of clothes.

I also want to have things I appreciate. Not just stuff. See above.

I want to step away from mindless consumerism and the need for new, where my identity and self-esteem is tied to having new clothes. I need to remind myself about the concept of “enoughness”. And I really like the concept of a considered wardrobe, or a capsule wardrobe, where clothes match and you don’t have to think much about what you are going to wear, putting an end to trying on a range of outfits, to see which one looks OK. And then, with a coordinated wardrobe, just updating with a few key pieces to stay on trend.

A side benefit may be I save some money which will go to other things, like having mani and pedicures (never said I would be all holy and not frivolous), saving for an overseas holiday (when I asked a colleague at work how he afforded business class to Europe, he replied that he doesn’t buy all the new clothes and shoes I do!) and fixing up our house and garden (so it is gorgeous and I am living the fantasy me life).

One month down and I have decluttered many items from my wardrobe.

And, excuse the shouting but I am pretty amazed at myself, I HAVEN’T BOUGHT ANY CLOTHES IN JANUARY, NOT EVEN IN THE POST CHRISTMAS SALES AND NOT EVEN THE BEAUTIFUL CLOTHES AT BYRON BAY.

Today’s decluttered item = I love this dress. It so soft and drapes beautifully. But we all have to accept our shape changes as we age. I must farewell this dress. The dress no longer sits well on me. My advice: try on clothes that you haven’t worn in a while, including those items that you still like. Just because they still fit, doesn’t mean they suit you.

    • Thanks for dropping by, Vicki. And thanks for saying the dress looks good. Unfortunately, while it sits well on the waist and hips, it doesn’t fit my breasts. The down side of being a size 10/12 but with large breasts, is that many clothes don’t fit.
