The Real Mrs Miniver by Ysenda Maxtone Graham

Snow is falling, unit’s warm, what to do? Read, of course.

If you loved the movie, Mrs Miniver, starring Greer Garson, you’ll love this book. The Real Mrs Miniver is Jan Struthers, also know as Joyce Maxtone Graham.

If you don’t even know the movie, this book is still engaging. It gives a surprising account of life among the upper middle class in pre-war and World War Two England, Scotland and America.

I did skim a few bits because the descriptions were too dry and detailed but for the most part Struthers’ granddaughter gives a sympathetic account of Struthers’ life – her bohemian lifestyle, her creativity, her mental illness – using Struthers’ own writing to highlight her feelings and opinions.

Today’s decluttered item = the book. I’ll leave it in the unit we are staying in, for another holiday maker, saving the weight on the trip home.
